Water level below alert mark at all gauges across Valley: IFC
Srinagar, Jul 28: Amid fresh rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir, the weatherman here has predicted flash floods and issued an orange alert after it forecasts more rains at isolated places across the Union Territory till July end.
The Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC), however, said that the water level is below the alert mark at all gauges of the valley.
In a communique issued by the MeT to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) on Wednesday, it said that at present, it’s cloudy at most places of JK with Thunderstorm and rain at some places of Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi and neighbourhood.
“Widespread intermittent rain most likely to continue till 30th. Heavy rain is also possible at some places which may lead to flash flood, mudslide, landslide and water logging (low lying areas). Accordingly, people are once again advised to remain alert and very cautious as water levels has raised in all rivers. Don’t venture out on hilly and landslides, Mudslide prone areas,” the communique reads.
Director MeT, Sonum Lotus told that till the end of this month, the weather will remain cloudy and there is possibility of intermittent rainfall in the plains of the valley while the hilly areas of North and South Kashmir including the Pir Panjal Range may witness rainfall and orange alert has been already issued.
He further said, in case if it rains more in plains, there can be waterlogging, and people have to be cautious and avoid venturing near landslide and flash flood areas.
“Currently it is raining and widespread intermittent rain is most likely to continue till July end, heavy rain is also possible at some places which may lead to flash flood, mudslide, landslide and water logging (low lying areas),” he said.
Meanwhile, a official from I&FC department said that the water level is well below the alert mark at all gauges of the valley.
“The water level is below the alert marks, at all the gauges of the valley,” he said, adding that the current water level at Sangam gauge is 5.4 Ft, while at Ram Munshi Bagh the water level is at 6.47 Ft. (KNO)
