Jammu, April 17: Heavy rains coupled with high-velocity winds Wednesday evening caused widespread damage, particularly to power infrastructure across Jammu district and adjoining areas.
As the windstorm swept across Jammu, power supply was the major and immediate casualty at around 7.40 pm or so.
High velocity winds uprooted several billboards, tin structures, electric poles and trees thus damaging some vehicles also in several areas. Heavy rains followed a windstorm. Damage to power infrastructure led to outages in major portions of Jammu city, Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Canal Road and city outskirts.
Till late this evening, power could not be restored in several areas.
Reports stated that a portion of the sidewall of the stretch of Civil Secretariat towards Dogra Hall caved in, damaging a few vehicles there. Besides, a mobile tower collapsed in Bagh-e-Bahu area.
PDD officials said that efforts were underway to restore power supply. “Real extent of damage can be ascertained only after assessment,” they said.
