Srinagar, May 6: The problem of Asthma if left untreated becomes chronic as a result of symptoms become unremitting, Valley’s top Pulmonologist Dr. Naveed Nazir Shah said on Tuesday.

Speaking to News Agency on the World Asthma Day, the annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve awareness about the disease and care around the world, Dr Naveed underlined that continuous treatment keeps the illness “under check.”

In the initial stage, he said, the symptoms of Asthma are intermittent characterized by cough, chest tightness and breathlessness or panting especially when exposed to allergen to which a particular patient is allergic.

“In initial stage, the problem is intermittent but if left untreated, it becomes chronic as a result of which symptoms become unremitting,” he said.

He said that in case of Asthma like blood pressure or diabetes, a patient has to get continuous treatment to keep it under control.

World Asthma Day is held on the first Tuesday in May. The theme of this year was “make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”.

Asthma is one of the most common non-communicable diseases and according to a rough estimate, it affects over 260 million people and is responsible for over 450,000 deaths each year globally.(GNS)
