A member of local panchayat was critically injured after he was shot at by masked gunmen in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday, reports said.
News agency GNS reported that the masked gunmen barged inside the house of Abdul Majeed Dar son-in-law of Ghulam Ahmad Malla and fired at him, leaving him seriously injured.
Quoting a police officer, the report said that Majeed who suffered a bullet injury was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where from he was referred to SMHS hospital in Srinagar in a critical condition.
The report said that Majeed is a panch who had contested the recently-concluded Panchayat election as an independent candidate. He was earlier affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party, said the report.
Soon after the incident, a joint team of army and SOG launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area to nab the assailants.
