Kupwara, July 05: The chance discovery of methane gas from a tube well in a remote village of Qaziabad in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Reports said that emission of gaseous substances was reported at a newly-dug tube well at Sehpora village of Qaziabad in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
An eyewitness said that gas emanating from the hole caught fire when a match was struck.
Experts from Science department told that methane that is produced and released into the atmosphere is taken up by methane sinks, which include soil and the process of methane oxidation in the troposphere (the lowest atmospheric region.
“Most methane produced naturally is offset by its uptake into natural sinks. Anthropogenic methane production, however, can cause methane concentrations to increase more quickly than they are offset by sinks”, he added
Meanwhile, no one was hurt in the incident. The fire has been brought under control.(KNO)
