Tral, June 26: Authorities have imposed a strict ban on bathing in Lam Nallah, a key source of drinking water for the residents of Tehsil Aripal, following alarming reports of water contamination and a subsequent outbreak of jaundice among children.
The decision comes in response to a formal communication received from the Office of the Assistant Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti Sub Division Tral (No. TSD/171-73, dated 18/06/2025), and multiple complaints from local residents. It was reported that a considerable number of people visit Lam Nallah daily for bathing and other activities, which has led to the deterioration of water quality.
Officials say the contamination is believed to be directly responsible for several recent cases of jaundice, particularly affecting children in the area. Notably, a similar health crisis occurred last year, which was also traced back to polluted water from the same source.
“In light of these serious public health concerns and to prevent the further spread of waterborne diseases, an immediate ban has been imposed on bathing in Lam Nallah,” an official said.
To ensure public awareness and compliance, the Tehsildar of Aripal has been instructed to install a prominent hoarding at the site warning about the contamination and the bathing ban. Additionally, awareness campaigns through social media and other platforms will be launched.
The SDPO, Tral, has also been asked to maintain strict surveillance in the area to enforce the ban and prevent any activities that could further contaminate the water source.
Authorities urge residents to refrain from using Lam Nallah for any activity other than for approved domestic use until further notice. Efforts are underway to explore alternative sources of safe drinking water for the affected communities. (GNS)
