Srinagar, Jan 1: As the New Year begins, intense cold waves have tightened their grip over the northern regions of Kashmir, Jammu, and Ladakh, with minimum temperatures plunging significantly below freezing point in many areas. Here’s a breakdown of the icy conditions recorded today:
•Kashmir Region•
The Kashmir Valley witnessed bone-chilling weather, with several locations experiencing severe sub-zero temperatures.
• Gulmarg topped the chart as the coldest place at -8.8°C, followed by Shopian at -10.2°C.
• Popular tourist destinations like Pahalgam and Sonamarg recorded lows of -7.6°C and -7.2°C, respectively.
• Anantnag was notably frigid at -8.1°C, while Pulwama and Kulgam both touched -7.0°C.
• Other locations, including Srinagar at -4.4°C and Kupwara at -0.3°C, also felt the sting of winter.
•Jammu Region•
The Jammu division experienced relatively moderate weather compared to Kashmir, but some higher-altitude areas remained frosty.
• Jammu city recorded a minimum of 8.4°C, while Ramban experienced an unusually warm low of 10.4°C.
• Cold conditions prevailed in Banihal (-1.3°C) and Padder (-5.0°C).
• Other areas like Bhaderwah (-0.4°C), Katra (5.7°C), and Udhampur (6.2°C) saw relatively mild conditions.
•Ladakh Region•
Ladakh remained the coldest region, with Drass, famously known as the “Gateway to Ladakh,” recording a bone-chilling low of -18.3°C, making it the coldest location in the region.
• Kargil followed closely at -14.4°C, while Leh registered a minimum temperature of -8.2°C.
