Scores of students from Islamia College Srinagar on Saturday took out a protest rally against the summoning of Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the NIA to Delhi and the crackdown on religious leaders
The protestors raised pro-justice slogans and urged the international community to play their role in seeking a peaceful resolution of Kashmir dispute.
They also condemned the ban on Jamat-e-Islami and termed it as ‘direct interference with the religious affairs of the people.’
“Masjids and other religious institutions of Muslims are being locked. We strongly condemn all these acts aimed at curtailing our religious freedom,” they said.
They said that Muslims of Kashmir, irrespective of their political ideologies have a deep emotional and religious association with the pulpit of Jamia Masjid and religious head Mirwaiz.
They added that apart from Muslims, even Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs have high regard for the Mirwaiz.
Later, the protesters dispersed off peacefully.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had been summoned by the National Investigation Agency to appear for questioning in an alleged funding case.
