Srinagar, July 28: An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Fakir Gujri forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar on Monday.
According to official sources, the gunfight began during a cordon-and-search operation launched jointly by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police after intelligence inputs suggested the presence of terrorists in the area.
Following an initial exchange of fire, there was a lull lasting a couple of hours. However, fresh firing was reported again as contact had been re-established with the hiding militants.
Senior officers from both the Army and J&K Police have reached the spot to supervise the ongoing operation.
Preliminary inputs suggest that a group of militants affiliated with the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit are believed to be trapped in the area. The operation is underway, and further details are awaited.
