Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was arrested on Monday to prevent from leading programmes on Gaw Kadal massacre anniversary, said a spokesman.
The spokesman said Malik was arrested from his residence in Maisuma area of Srinagar on Monday morning.
On January 21, 1990, over 50 civilians were killed when government forces opened fire on a procession at a bridge in the Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for a shutdown in Gaw Kadal and adjacent areas to mark the 29th anniversary of the massacre.
