Srinagar, Feb 09: Senior leaders of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), led by former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, are looking to rejoin the Congress.
This development comes after a series of setbacks faced by DPAP, which has struggled to establish its footing in Jammu and Kashmir, with poor performances in both the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
When asked about the speculations during a press conference, J&K Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra confirmed that several former DPAP leaders have expressed their desire to return to Congress.
Karra stated, “Yes, it is a fact that almost all the leaders who were in DPAP and have now left the party want to rejoin Congress. We had discussed this matter with the central leadership, and the issue is under deliberation on a case-by-case basis.”
“Although some preliminary talks have taken place, a decision has not been made yet due to time constraints and other pressing matters. Once discussions are held, a clearer picture will emerge.” Karra further added
Pertinently, the leaders seeking to rejoin Congress had resigned from DPAP last year. Following its defeat in the 2024 assembly elections, DPAP’s activities in Jammu and Kashmir have come to a halt. Party founder Ghulam Nabi Azad has also distanced himself from the region’s political landscape, leaving the party’s future in uncertainty.
