Srinagar, Jan 8: The bone-chilling cold wave continues to grip the Kashmir, Jammu, and Ladakh regions as temperatures dipped significantly overnight. The icy conditions are particularly severe in the higher altitudes, with Drass in Ladakh recording an extreme low of -23.5°C, making it the coldest place in the region.
Kashmir Region:
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of -1.0°C, while tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg faced harsher conditions at -9.8°C and -10.4°C, respectively. Pahalgam experienced a frigid -8.2°C, while Kokernag and Shopian settled at -1.9°C each. Larnoo recorded one of the sharpest drops at -5.0°C, with Anantnag and Kulgam at -3.1°C and -3.6°C, respectively.
Jammu Region:
Relatively milder temperatures were recorded in Jammu, with the city itself experiencing a low of 7.0°C. Higher reaches such as Padder and Bhaderwah, however, faced colder conditions at -5.5°C and 0.1°C, respectively. Kathua recorded the highest minimum temperature in the region at 9.2°C, while Banihal and Batote saw temperatures of 2.8°C and 2.5°C, respectively.
Ladakh:
The cold wave has tightened its grip in Ladakh, where Leh recorded a biting -13.0°C. Kargil was even colder at -13.5°C, while Drass, known as one of the coldest inhabited places in the world, touched an unbearable low of -23.5°C.
The extreme cold has led to frozen water bodies and disruptions in daily life, particularly in Kashmir and Ladakh. Travelers to higher altitudes are urged to remain vigilant as sub-zero temperatures and icy roads pose risks.
