“Rizwan had died of excessive bleeding caused by deep wounds”
The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar today submitted preliminary autopsy report of Awantipora school principal, Rizwan Asad Pandith, who had died in police custody, to authorities probing the case.
An official said the report was finalised on Friday and handed over to the authorities conducting inquiry into the custodial death.
As per the findings, Rizwan had died of “excessive bleeding caused by deep wounds on his body”. “He had deep wounds on thighs, hips and abdomen. Bleeding through external wounds has been suspected to be caused by some sharp object,” the official said. “Excessive bleeding can lead to fatal shock.”
While quoting the findings, the official said, Rizwan had no internal injuries. “The X- Ray and CT Scan have not revealed any such injury,” he said.
As per the findings the death had taken place “at least 12 hours” prior to autopsy, which was carried out on afternoon of last Tuesday by a team of doctors from the GMC and directorate of health services Kashmir.
Rizwan’s left eye had turned black “probably due to blunt trauma”, the official said. Some of the injuries on the body of the youth were found to be “older than others”.
According to authorities at the GMC the final autopsy report will take about two weeks. “Final report will be compiled after reports are received from forensic laboratory and pathology and radiology department of the medical college,” the official said.
Rizwan was picked up by police for questioning late on Sunday from his home in Awantipora. His body was handed over to his family on Tuesday
