Srinagar: A staple of Kashmiri breakfasts for decades, the Rs 5 Tchout, a traditional bread, is being phased out by local bakers (Kandur). The decision, attributed to rising production costs, has left households reeling as the beloved bread, known for its affordability and wide consumption, is replaced with a 62-gram variant priced at Rs 10.

Local bakers cite increased prices for flour, fuel, and other raw materials as reasons for this transition. “It’s no longer sustainable to sell the bread for Rs 5. The cost of production has almost doubled,” explained a baker from downtown Srinagar Told News Agency QNS

Kashmir’s traditional bakers have decided to phase out the Rs 5 Tchout, bread, which was the most popular and hugely consumed one in the breakfast.

Now they will be selling a 62-gram bread for Rs 10. The bread phase-out started with the disappearance of Rs 0.50 paisa bread, Re 1 bread and now Rs 5 bread. This shift is expected to have a huge impact on the monthly spending for every family-(QNS)
