Maharashtra: Marriages are made in heaven, so they say, but in today’s age when financial stability becomes a crucial factor besides family background and horoscope matching, a credit score in the CIBIL report too may play a decisive role.

Seems unthinkable, but that’s what happened in Murtizapur, Maharashtra a couple of days ago when a girl’s family turned down a marriage proposal after discovering that the suitor had a low score in the CIBIL report.

A CIBIL score is a summary of credit history, including loans, credit cards and repayment record, which points to financial discipline of an individual.

Sources said the families of the prospective bride and groom were in the final stages of fixing the wedding. Both sides had agreed on the match, and preparations were under way to solemnise the marriage. However, during a formal meeting between the families, the bride’s uncle insisted on checking the prospective groom’s CIBIL score.

When the CIBIL report was checked, the bride’s family was stunned to discover that the prospective groom had taken multiple loans from various banks. Eyebrows were raised after witnessing the low score in the report, which in general is an indication of loan default, irregular payment and financial instability.

The bride’s uncle argued that if a man is already burdened with loans, how can he provide financial security to his wife? Other family members shared his concern and immediately withdrew the wedding proposal.

The case from Murtizapur proves that financial literacy is not just essential for banking but also plays a significant role in social life, said some financial advisors.
