Srinagar, Apr 03: In a swift action, Police in Awantipora on Thursday arrested two extortionists posing as law enforcement officers to extort money from the general public.

A police team of Police Station Tral apprehended two individuals after a complaint was received from one person namely Mohd Altaf Ganai son of Mohd Ramzan Ganai resident of Nageenpora Tral against them they are fraudulently posing as law enforcement officers to extort money from the general public, a police spokesman said in a statement issued.

On this complaint, a case under FIR number 31 of 2025 under relevant section of laws was registered at Police Station Tral and investigation was initiated, police said.

“During the investigation, both the accused persons were arrested and taken into custody for further investigation. The duo identified as Bashir Ahmad Sheikh son of Mohd Jamal Sheikh resident of Saimooh and Mohd Shafi Dar son of Gh Nabi Dar resident of Dadsora were targeting gullible citizens, falsely claiming to have police authority and demanding money under various pretexts. Their activities came to light after multiple complaints were received from victims who had been coerced into paying sums of money out of fear of legal consequences,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, police urged citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to the nearest station or by dialling 112.(KNO)
