DC urges doctors to continue duties, promises action if cops found guilty
Srinagar, March 8: Police on Friday evening allegedly manhandled a doctor at Public Health Centre Mattan in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.
BMO Mattan Dr Ashraf Padder told GNS that a police party led by SHO brought the body of a policeman who according to them had died suddenly in district jail while preparing for prayers.
A doctor on duty refused to conduct postmortem as it was already very late and this infuriated the cops who threatened the medico of dire consequences.
Even as another doctor objected to the entry of cops along with weapons inside the emergency department of the hospital, the policemen thrashed the doctor.
SHO Jasib told GNS that the doctors misbehaved with the policemen while they wanted completion of legal formality of postmortem done and that he has filed a complaint with the BMO.
Meanwhile, local doctors association objected to the “highhandedness” of the police and has called to observe two hour strike in all the hospitals of district Anantnag tomorrow.
Further more if the authorities did not shift the SHO Mattan, the doctor body said it will have no other option but to go for a Valley wide shutdowm Monday.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Khalid Jehangir urged doctors not to resort to strike as it would affect patient care in the south Kashmir district. He said that action would be taken against the policemen if found guilty of misbehaving with doctors. “I request doctors not to resort to strike as it would hamper the patient care.”
The policeman who had died apparently due to a heart attack was identified as Ghulam Hassan Raina of IRP.
