Former flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi has been appointed interim chief selector of Pakistan men’s team.
The newly-appointed management committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named an interim selection committee.
Afridi, who excused to take a permanent role in the board while speaking on a local news channel the other day, will be the chairman of selection committee whereas Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum will be the members. Haroon Rashid, who is also a member of PCB management committee, will be the convener.
The committee will pick ODI squad for the home New Zealand series, scheduled in Karachi next year in January.
The chairman of management committee, Najam Sethi welcomed the interim selection and looks forward to some brave and bold decisions.
“I welcome the interim men’s national selection committee and have no doubts that despite limited time, they will make brave and bold decisions that will help us produce a strong and competitive side in the series against New Zealand,
“Shahid Afridi has been an attacking cricketer who played all his cricket with no fear. He has nearly 20 years of cricket experience, has featured in all formats with significant success and more importantly, has always backed and supported young talent. So, in our collective opinion, there is no better person than him to understand the rigours, demands and challenges of the modern day game,” he said.
On the other hand, Afridi thanked Sethi for showing belief in his services. “I feel honoured to have been assigned this responsibility by the PCB management committee and will leave no stone unturned in fulfilling this responsibility to the best of my abilities,” he said.
