Government forces on Sunday fired tear gas shells to chase away the protesters who were pelting them with stones during searches at the site of a gunfight in Babagund village of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
An eye witness said the youth from adjoining villages were pelting the forces with stones as they were carrying out final searches at the site of the gunfight that left two militants and five forces’ personnel dead.
The forces, he said, were responding by firing tear gas shells.
Earlier, police said that the gunfight that was raging for over 50 hours had ended with the killing of both the militants.
“Their identities and group affiliations are being ascertained,” said a police spokesman.
A civilian was killed in clashes near the gunfight site on Friday.
