An 88-year-old man’s decades-long pursuit of a jackpot paid off when he won a Rs 5 crore lottery prize in Punjab . Dera bassi  resident Mahant Dwaraka Dass, who won the first prize at the Punjab State Lohri Makar Sankranti Bumper Lottery 2023, said he had been buying tickets for over 35 years.

Speaking to ANI, the winner said: “I am feeling happy. I have been buying lotteries for the last 35-40 years. I will distribute the winning amount among my two sons and to my Dera.”

Mahant’s son Narendra said the winner had asked his grandson to buy the lottery ticket, which ended up hitting the Rs 5 crore lottery prize.

Since the winnings exceed Rs 10,000, the lottery income will be subject to TDS.

Karam Singh, Assistant Lottery Director, said Mahant will take home around Rs 3.5 lakh after tax deduction at source.

“He won the first prize of Rs 5 Cr. After completing the prescribed procedure, the amount will be given to him after deducting 30% tax,” the official explained.

Earlier, in April 2022, another Punjab lottery winner staked his claim to a life-changing fortune after pushing his luck for nearly 34 years.
