Srinagar: A newborn baby girl, who is believed to have been abandoned by her parents the preceding night, was found dead by police in Srinagar’s Rajbagh area on Monday.

The infant, who had been kept in a box as per eyewitnesses, was abandoned across the road at Rajbagh crossing, In-charge SHO Rajbagh, Ruzaid Ahmad, told Kashmir Reader.

Ahmad said the baby girl had died when police reached the spot. An FIR under number 9/2019 had been registered into the case, he added.

In the past few years, there have been regular incidents of baby abandonments in the valley. Only last month, a man from south Kashmir’s Shopian had allegedly tried to bury alive his son who was born with a deformity, in Srinagar’s Malkhah graveyard. Police later arrested him.

Earlier in the year, an infant was found abandoned in old city’s Nowhatta area.

In 2015, a dog carrying a dead newborn in its mouth through the city centre Lal Chowk had shocked people.

Expressing shock over the latest incident, a netizen who shared the picture of the abandoned girl on social media wrote, “Animals have a better ethical compass than some humans and this is only the latest proof!” over claims that the box in which the baby girl was kept was guarded by dogs the whole night.

Another netizen said that the incident was a “shame on us all” and demanded that a chargesheet be filed in the case and the culprits be brought to book.
