Accused arrested, case registered; locals demand action against drug peddlers

Srinagar, Apr 15: In a tragic incident that has deeply shaken Rafiabad village in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, a son allegedly murdered his mother, who was in her late 40s.

The accused, identified as Aamir Wani alias Gajini, worked as a driver and was reportedly a drug addict, locals told. They are demanding strict action against the killer and urging the police to crack down on drug peddlers operating within the area.

Officials said the tragic event took place during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday in Hadipora village of Rafiabad. The victim, whose identity is being withheld, was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon by her son.

Police said they arrested the accused shortly after the commission of the crime. The case has been registered at Police Station Dangiwacha and further investigations are underway, a police official said.

He added that the body of the deceased was transferred to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Sopore for legal-medico formalities.

Expressing their concerns, locals called upon the police to take strict measures against drug peddlers to prevent such incidents from recurring. They expressed confidence in the Sopore police team, headed by SP Divya D (IPS).

In March last year, a similar tragedy took place in Dangerpora village of the district, where another ‘drug addict’ son killed his elderly mother. The accused, Showket Ahmed, had a history of drug addiction and had been taken into preventive custody by the police multiple times.(KNO)
