Skims Soura Hospital

Srinagar, June 11: Commissioning and testing of an intelligent fire detection and alarm system took place in the Central Store and Pharmacy Block of SKIMS. On the occasion, Director SKIMS, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, emphasized, “Fire safety in hospitals is non-negotiable. Infrastructure must be supported with regular trainings and strict protocols to safeguard lives and critical assets.”

A mock drill was held on site, involving the Fire & Security Department of SKIMS, pharmacy and central store staff, in collaboration with the Fire and Emergency Services Department. The practical exercise aimed to familiarize users with the functioning and response mechanism of the new system.

The event was attended by Dean Medical Faculty, Additional Director, Medical Superintendent, and the Nodal Officer for Fire Safety, among others.

Director SKIMS issued strict instructions to the Mechanical and Civil Engineering departments to expedite the upgradation of the fire safety project. He also directed the Nodal Officer Fire Safety to prepare and circulate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on fire safety and emergency response among all SKIMS staff.

The newly installed addressable fire alarm system is of the latest configuration. It features addressable modules, enabling the control panel to pinpoint the exact fire location. The system is designed for integration with firefighting systems and lift control operations. It is programmed to differentiate between various types of smoke to prevent false alarms and is equipped with Rate of Rise (ROR) detectors to avoid false heat detection triggers.

The demonstration marked a significant step towards strengthening fire preparedness and ensuring safety standards at SKIMS.
