Srinagar, June 20: Police on Friday said that in Handwara they have achieved a significant breakthrough in a sensitive sexual assault case involving a minor girl (name withheld). 

Police said that the victim attempted suicide by hanging at her home and was immediately shifted to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, for medical treatment. 

Despite efforts, she succumbed. The victim was found to be six months pregnant at the time of the incident. A case vide FIR No. 17/2025, registered on 06/05/2025 under sections 64 BNS, 5(J)(II) and 6 of the POCSO Act and in-depth investigation was initiated. 

The spokesman further stated that during the course of investigation, several suspects were summoned for questioning. Through sustained investigation and comprehensive forensic analysis, particularly DNA profiling, an individual from Gulgam, Kupwara, was conclusively identified.

The DNA report confirmed his involvement by establishing him as the biological father of the foetus. The accused has been arrested and taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
