A dispute between two engineering students at the Aligarh Muslim University’s hostel took an ugly turn when one of them hit the other student’s head with a cricket bat.

A dispute between two engineering students during a cricket match at the Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Nadeem Tareen hostel took an ugly turn when one of them hit the other student’s head with a cricket bat on Wednesday.

The condition of the injured student, identified as Sajid, a second-year B.Tech student, is critical. Although the university has suspended Shobhit, the student accused of hitting Sajid, other students have condemned the incident and have sought that Shobhit be rusticated from the university.

According to police, the incident occurred at the AMU campus falling in the jurisidiction of the Civil Line police station. Both Sajid, a Kashmiri student, and Shobhit were playing cricket when a dispute arose between the two and Shobhit hit Sajid’s head with a bat, critically injuring him.

Sajid was immediately rushed to the ICU of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and his condition is still critical. Soon after the incident, the AMU proctor filed an FIR against Shobhit and made a representation to the police to initiate legal action against him.

AMU proctor professor Wasim Ali said Sajid is undergoing treatment at the ICU. “Realizing the seriousness of the matter, we suspended the accused student, Shobhit K, with immediate effect and also registered an FIR against him,” said Wasim Ali.

Deputy superintendent of police Shwetabh Pandey said a case has been registered in the matter and the accused student has been arrested for the alleged attack on Sajid. “Legal proceedings have been initiated in the case,” said the police officer.

Meanwhile, other students of the university have blocked the centenary gate of the university as a mark of protest against the incident and to press their demand that the accused student be immediately rusticated.

Misbah, a student protesting against the incident, said Sajid was attacked by Shobhit, a student living at AMU’s Nadeem Tareen hostel, while playing a cricket match. “The next 24 hours are very important for Sajid… Our demand is that the student accused of the assault be immediately expelled from the university,” said Misbah.

Zahid, a student from AMU, said, “The proctor has placated us by suspending the student accused of assault. We do not accept this and our protest will go on till he is suspended.”

Proctor Wasim Ali said fellow students are protesting against the attack and are demanding the rustication of the accused student. “We will take further action after the investigation of the case,” said the proctor.
