‘We will work on numerous issues affecting girl child including nutrition, security, lawful rights, health and education’.

Srinagar, Jan 25: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Friday asserted that the idea of development cannot be conceived without the active participation of women.

In her message on the National Girl Child Day, party women’s wing president and former Chairman Women’s Commission Shameema Firdous said, “The day should be observed with a sole purpose of promoting awareness on a range of issues including education, health, and nutrition of girls,” she said adding that the increased awareness among the people will help girls get proper education, and equal importance as their counterparts elsewhere.

Shameema said that National Conference has done a great deal of work towards ensuring women equality in the society. “It was National Conference that started the idea of co-schooling in the state of Jammu and Kashmir besides giving gender neutral voting rights to the people,” she said adding that under the dynamic leadership of Omar Abdullah the party will work on numerous issues affecting girl child including nutrition, security, health, lawful rights and education.

Party’s State Secretary and former minister Sakina Itoo in her message on girl child day said, “The plight of girls remain an utmost concern.

However, education is the key to reducing discrimination against girls. Gender inequality is a multifaceted issue. The need of the hour is to do away with the gender assumptions by educating society. The consecutive JKBOSE results and other national level examinations have lately established that girls are no less a human being than their male counterparts,” she said.
