Hundreds of oil tankers and light-motor vehicles (LMVs) stranded on Srinagar-Jammu highway have crossed the Jawahar Tunnel following the partial opening of the strategic road on Tuesday, police said.

IGP Traffic Alok Kumar said they were trying to clear all stranded vehicles from the highway. “Over 400 oil tankers and LMVs have so far crossed the Jawahar Tunnel,” he said.

The strategic road through which all supplied are pushed into the Kashmir valley partially opened today evening following seven-day closure.

The 270-km-long highway was closed for traffic last Wednesday following heavy snowfall and incessant rains which triggered avalanches and landslides at various places especially on Qazigund-Banihal-Ramban stretch including Jawahar Tunnel – the gateway to Kashmir Valley.
